March 27, 2017 – Budget 2017 is another step toward better living conditions for South Shore families and residents of all ages, today announced Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament for Longueuil — Charles-LeMoyne, and  Alexandra Mendès, Member of Parliament for Brossard — Saint-Lambert.

By putting citizens first, the federal budget tabled on March 22nd by Finance Minister Bill Morneau focuses on smart investments to help create jobs and provide greater opportunities to the middle class and those working hard to join it, while also granting immediate support to those who need it most.

Budget 2017 proposes a number of measures that specifically address the needs and priorities of the South Shore:

Innovation and Training

Making Canada a leader in an innovation-driven economy by promoting the success of small and medium-sized businesses, creating quality jobs and equipping Canadians from all regions with the skills and tools they need to succeed, notably through investments aimed at helping workers upgrade their skills, at supporting students in acquiring the skills and experience they need to kick-start their career, and at helping more unemployed workers pursue training while remaining eligible for Employment Insurance benefits.

Social Infrastructure

Building stronger communities and neighbourhoods through better access to affordable housing, early learning and child care services, home care and mental health support, and cultural and recreational infrastructure. Among other things, a new National Housing Fund will be established to address critical housing issues and prioritize support for vulnerable citizens, including seniors, survivors fleeing situations of domestic violence, persons with disabilities, those dealing with mental health and addiction issues, and veterans.

Added to these are measures aimed at making maternity and parental benefits more flexible for families and at creating a new Employment Insurance caregiving benefit that will cover a broader range of situations where individuals are providing care to an adult family member who requires significant support in order to recover from a critical illness or injury. These investments will have a major impact on families in the region.

Public Transit

Investing in public transit projects that will help shorten commutes, reduce the country’s ecological footprint and allow Canadians to spend more time with their families. This delivers on the government’s commitment to build on its unprecedented investments in 2016 to help strengthen communities and drive business in order to produce significant economic growth. To ensure that public transit dollars are invested in a way that makes the most sense for communities, the government is working closely with the province to bring about positive change. Ambitious projects are expected to transform Canada’s cities over the next decade, among them the Réseau électrique métropolitain, which proposes to connect Montréal’s South Shore, North Shore and downtown area to the city’s West Island and international airport.

“I am very proud that this second budget of our Government will allow us to continue in our efforts to improve the quality of life of our local populations. By investing in what the citizens of Longueuil — Charles-LeMoyne need today, such as affordable housing, better home care, more services to address homelessness, and cultural and recreational infrastructure, while helping the region’s workers become better equipped for the economy of tomorrow, we are ensuring that everyone has a real and fair chance at success.

“With Budget 2017, our Government will continue to deliver the things that matter most to the people of our riding: better jobs, a healthier lifestyle, stronger communities and more opportunities for our children and grandchildren,” said Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament.

“I am proud of the budget tabled by our Government and particularly, of its implications for my fellow citizens of Brossard – Saint-Lambert! The measures outlined, including the new Strategic Innovation Fund, our commitment to the fight against gender inequality as well as the implementation of new Employment Insurance programs to better support families all while facilitating access to such programs, represent concrete actions that strengthen our communities.

“Budget 2017 demonstrates that our government is responsible and conscientious of economic realities, has a long-term vision and is committed to investing in both Canadians today, as well as in the citizens of tomorrow,” stated Alexandra Mendès, Member of Parliament.
