Our governement announced that an additional 324 makes and models of assault-style firearms are now prohibited in Canada. It will also advance regulatory measures to strengthen gun control and keep Canadians safe.

This announcement also includes investments in border security to stop firearm smuggling and trafficking, tougher firearms legislation through C-21, and support for intervention and prevention programs to stop gun violence.

  • These weapons share the same characteristics as those prohibited in May 2020, and were identified following careful consideration by the RCMP.
  • They are of semi-automatic action with sustained rapid-fire capability and are of tactical or military design with large magazine capacity.
  • These weapons can no longer be legally used, sold, or imported in Canada. An amnesty order is now in place for individuals and businesses who own these weapons.

An expert panel working with the RCMP to provide advice to Public Safety officials are reviewing other firearms in the current market that meet the May 2020 definition. We will ensure no commonly used hunting guns are captured. We expect that work to be wrapped up in February 2025.

We just completed a pilot with businesses for the buyback, and have already collected and destroyed assault-style firearms from some businesses. An official launch of the program will come soon.

By December 13th 2024, we’ll table amendments establishing the Firearms Reference Table, meaning every new weapon entering the Canadian market will have to be expertly classified by the RCMP based on its technical specifications. No new firearm will enter the Canadian market before it’s been approved by the RCMP.

In January 2025, we’ll finalize the implementation of C-21, our generation-defining firearms legislation.

We’ll table regulations ensuring individuals who’re subject to a court mandated protection order or who’re suspected of stalking or domestic violence will have their licenses revoked.

In addition, the Government will also introduce regulations concerning large-capacity magazines in March 2025.

We’ve also committed to the Ukrainian Government to work with businesses and identify how these guns could be donated to support the fight for democracy in Ukraine.

We’re taking action to save lives, and making sure weapons built for the battlefield don’t end up in our communities. We think assault-style firearms don’t belong in our communities. That’s why we’re collecting and destroying them, all the while protecting Canadian hunting traditions.
