We know that the past few years have been challenging, and while inflation is cooling and interest rates are falling, we know Canadians still aren’t feeling it in their budgets yet.

Our government can’t set prices at the checkout, but we can put more money in Canadians’ pockets, helping them afford what they need and save for what they want.

Starting December 14, 2024, we’re giving all Canadians a tax break by fully relieving the GST/HST on essentials like groceries, snacks, and kids’ clothing. This tax break will apply to:

  • Prepared foods, including vegetable trays, pre-made meals and salads, and sandwiches.
  • Restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout, or delivery.
  • Snacks, including chips, candy, and granola bars.
  • Beer, wine, cider, and pre-mixed alcoholic beverages below 7 per cent ABV.
  • Children’s clothing and footwear, car seats, and diapers.
  • Children’s toys, such as board games, dolls, and video game consoles.
  • Books, print newspapers, and puzzles for all ages.
  • Christmas trees.

This initiative will deliver meaningful savings and real relief at the register for Canadians until February 15, 2025.

Additionally, in early spring 2025, Canadians who worked in 2023 and earned less than $150,000, will receive the new Working Canadians Rebate. This $250 payment will go directly to middle-class Canadians, who have been working so hard to beat inflation. The rebate will give 18.7 million Canadians, including an estimated 965,000 seniors, the extra support to buy what they need.

With a tax break on essentials and a rebate for workers, our Liberal government is delivering meaningful savings and will continue to help Canadians by lowering costs when they need it most.
