Greenfield Park, June 5, 2025 – Today, Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament for Longueuil—Charles-LeMoyne, was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, the Honourable David McGuinty, by the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada.
Ms. Romanado will support the Minister in his mandate to build a modern, agile, and mission-ready military that reflects Canadian values and meets current and future challenges.
“It is an honour for me to assume these new responsibilities as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, a portfolio that is especially close to my heart. As a mother with two sons and a daughter-in-law currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, I have a deep personal understanding of the realities and challenges our service members and their families face, and I look forward to working with Minister McGuinty and his team to further our government’s commitment to better serving the women and men who serve our country with such courage and generosity,” said Ms. Romanado.
Sherry Romanado was first elected to the Montréal South Shore riding of Longueuil-Charles-LeMoyne in 2015 and subsequently re-elected in 2019, 2021 and 2025. During her time in office, she has held the roles of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Seniors, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness.
She also served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, has sat on the standing committees on Procedure and House Affairs, on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, on Veterans Affairs, and on National Defence, and was a member of the special committees on Electoral Reform and on the Economic Relationship between Canada and the United States.
Born and raised in Greenfield Park, Quebec, MP Romanado is an avid distance runner and has taken part in numerous editions of the Canada Army Run. She was also an active volunteer with the Army Cadets program and is a longtime member and supporter of Royal Canadian Legion branches 94 (Greenfield Park) and 159 (Saint-Hubert).
Role of the Parliamentary Secretary
In the Government of Canada, the Parliamentary Secretary is a Member of Parliament appointed by the Prime Minister to support a Minister in their parliamentary and policy responsibilities. They act as a liaison between the Minister, other Members of Parliament, and parliamentary committees, facilitating communication and helping to advance government priorities. The Parliamentary Secretary may also represent the Minister in the House of Commons during debates or Question Period, answer certain questions on their behalf, and sometimes participate in official events. Although not a member of Cabinet, they play an important role in ensuring the smooth running of the government in Parliament.
