Three Longueuil organizations have received funding from the Government of Canada for projects that will help facilitate the inclusion and social participation of seniors in the region, today announced Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament for Longueuil—Charles-LeMoyne, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. Thus, La Mosaïque and Centre de soutien entr’Aidants have been granted $25,000 and $24,500, respectively, for equipment upgrades, and La Croisée de Longueuil has received $9,300 for a project aimed at promoting volunteerism among seniors.

This assistance has been provided through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). The Government of Canada is providing approximately $35 million in funding for close to 1,850 community-based projects approved through the NHSP 2016–2017 Call for Proposals. Since 2004, this program has funded close to 19,700 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada, with a total Government of Canada investment of approximately $417 million.

Quotes

Through the many community-based projects we support each year, the Government of Canada helps seniors across Canada share their knowledge, skills and lived experiences in unique ways. NHSP projects reflect our ongoing commitment to ensure that seniors from coast to coast can be active and prosperous members of their communities.

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Canada

I am delighted that our government has chosen to support these three Longueuil—Charles-LeMoyne projects. This assistance will ensure that our seniors are able to keep active in upgraded facilities while helping to reduce social isolation among their peers.

Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament for Longueuil—Charles-LeMoyne

The significant funding we have received through the New Horizons for Seniors Program will help us maintain the quality of the services we provide, notably to seniors, by improving our heating system. We are proud to be able to benefit from this program and to thereby continue working optimally to be a vector of social development in our community.

Sylvie Dépelteau, Executive Director, La Mosaïque

This NHSP grant will enable us to install new windows in our 1953 building, which will have an important impact on maintaining this centre for caregivers. For 26 years, Centre de soutien entr’Aidants has been providing support to caregivers looking after an elderly loved one. These caregivers will now have access to a safer centre that is more attractive, more comfortable and better suited to their needs. These renovations will benefit current as well as future users.

Anyela Vergara, Executive Director, Centre de soutien entr’Aidants

Our seniors, leaders in their community, will now have the opportunity to promote the benefits of volunteerism and to share their knowledge. They will be able to become key resources to guide new volunteers in their community engagement.

Martha Ortiz, Executive Director, La Croisée de Longueuil
