Longueuil, March 26, 2026 – A government bill introduced in the House of Commons is proposing that the name of the federal electoral district of Longueuil-Charles-LeMoyne be officially changed to Longueuil-Greenfield Park.

Bill C-25: the Strong and Free Elections Act, tabled this morning, lays out a series of targeted amendments to the Canada Elections Act (CEA) that further protect and secure Canada’s elections. Part II of the Bill proposes name changes to 19 federal electoral districts across.

Sherry Romanado, Member of Parliament for Longueuil-Charles-LeMoyne since 2015, put forward the proposal to change the riding name to include Greenfield Park to better align with the naming conventions of neighbouring constituencies and to more accurately reflect the geographic identity of the riding and the Longueuil boroughs it encompasses. The new name would come into effect 90 days after the Bill receives Royal Assent.

Created in the federal electoral re-distribution of 2013, the South Shore riding of Longueuil-Charles-LeMoyne takes in a portion of the Longueuil borough of Vieux-Longueuil, a portion of the Saint-Hubert borough and the Greenfield Park borough in its entirety.

“This new name would better represent the communities that make up our constituency,” said Ms. Romanado. “It would ensure that residents see themselves reflected in the name of their electoral district and strengthen the connection between our shared identity and our representation in Parliament.”

The inclusion of Greenfield Park in the riding name is also intended to pay tribute to the community’s outstanding contribution to Canada’s military history. The borough is historically recognized for having one of the highest per capita enlistment rates in Canada during both World Wars.

“Recognizing Greenfield Park in the name of our riding would be a meaningful way to honour the courage and commitment of those who fought and died in service to our country and her allies and to ensure their legacy continues to shape our community and our country,” added Ms. Romanado, who serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence.

Federal electoral districts are reviewed after each decennial census to reflect changes and movements in Canada’s population. Following this exercise, Members of Parliament have the opportunity to propose a name change for their riding, subject to the approval of all recognized political parties in the House of Commons.
